Once again we give you our favourite tried and tested kids books.
Here are our top 5 kids books for this month:
1. The Highway Rat by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
Another favourite from the creators of The Gruffalo, my monkeys just love this book! The rhyming and the pictures are always what we love but kids love the naughty highway rat too – it’s fun to have a “baddie” in a story for a change! Parents love it because it’s a fun read and a test of our voices and acting skills!
2. Around the World on Eighty Legs by Amy Gibson
This is a really fun and educational read – for parents and kids alike! There are lots of animals that I bet you’ve never heard of (a pangolin or guillemot anyone?) But don’t worry, the hard to pronounce names have the pronunciation spelled out and if that doesn’t help, the rhyming might! The animals are organised by continent and there are a load of Australian animals included – a great way to teach little monkeys about animals they will find outside, in the bush or, of course, at the zoo! This book was included in our March ‘The Zoo’ box.
3. King Jack and the Dragon by Peter Bently & Helen Oxenbury
An imaginative, adventurous tale, King Jack and the Dragon is a wonderful bedtime story, full of castles, kings and beasts! Kids love it because it mimics their imaginary world and they can picture themselves fighting the dragons in their homemade forts of pillows and quilts! Parents love it because they get to dramatise and act out the story – and you can almost see into your child’s imagination. It truly is fun for everyone!
4. The Magnificent Tree by Nick Bland and Stephen Michael King
This collaboration between Nick Bland and Stephen Michael King is a real treat. The relationship between the grandfather Pop and his little granddaughter Bonny is really heartwarming. Parents love this book because it encourages ideas – no matter how big or small. Kids love this book because of the wonderful illustrations! It’s definitely a winner. Read our interview with the author Nick Bland here.
5. The ABC Book of Seasons by Helen Martin, Judith Simpson and Cheryl Orsini
This book was included in May ‘Seasons’ box. We decided to do a board book for both our younger subscribers and younger siblings. This is a great book as all the writers are wonderful and Helen Martin is an award-winning writer and director (she has worked on Play School and Hi-5). The text introduces children to the concept of weather and its changing patterns. Beautifully illustrated, this is the perfect book to share with young children to inspire a delight in nature and its cycles.
